The White Sands of Senggigi Beach

Senggigi Beach is a famous tourist spot on the west coast of the Indonesian island of Lombok. This beach is located some 12 kilometers north of Mataram, the capital and largest city of the province of West Nusa Tenggara.

For tourists staying on the well-known island of Bali, there are fast boats from Serangan (near Benoa Harbour) and Padang Bai Harbour or you can take a public ferry (very slow about 4 hours) from Padang Bai to Lembar Harbour (Lombok), which will land you about a one hour drive south of Senggigi.  From here you can catch a Bemo, the main means of road transport in the rural and coastal areas of Lombok.  These are small covered pick-up trucks with narrow padded seating benches in the rear, which you can easily hop on and off of for short to medium distance journeys around the island, and the fares are very cheap.

Entering the area of Senggigi beach, tourists will feel the gentle breeze that soothes. There is a good range of beach front hotels on offer from luxury expensive to economy value.  There are beautiful west facing sandy beaches to relax on with plenty of safe swimming areas.  The underwater scenery with exquisitely shaped coral is perfect for surface diving (snorkelling) when the waves are not too big.

Lombok is also becoming a recognised surfing destination with Desert Point offering the most challenging surf. However, when the swell is drawn from the Lombok Strait and the conditions are right, Senggigi can produce some big tubes too!
