Are you a bird lover? Are you ready to see your favorite bird? If so, then start packing for your new adventure. Bhutan, Land of the Thunder Dragon, is one of the best places on earth for bird watching. Bhutan boasts incredible mountain scenery and endless verdant forests, shrouded in Buddhist myth and legend and replete with a plethora of incredible and beautiful birds!
On a typical day’s birding with Wild Mountain Adventure in this avian wonderland, you will find yourself in breathtaking surroundings searching for legendary birds in pristine forests, with mighty Himalayan peaks towering in the distance. Bhutan is a destination like no other and increasingly being described as the birding capital of the world. Some 800 – 900 species of bird have been recorded and the country has been recognized as one of the 221 global endemic bird areas. Bird life has flourished here mainly due to the moist climate and wide altitude range, low population density, vast forest cover, and the government policy of strict conservation.
Bhutan is home to many species of birds across the country, found from the low-lying tropical forests of the south (200m) to the high glacier alpine regions of the north (7000m). The difference in geography and altitude in Bhutan make it one of the most diverse areas of bird habitats found in a single country. Over 50 species of known birds are winter migrants, including ducks, waders, birds of prey, thrushes, finches and buntings etc. and more than 16 species of vulnerable bird can be found. The country is also home to many birds that are in danger of extinction, including the Imperial Heron and Black-necked Crane. The endangered Black-necked Crane winters in the temperate highland marshes of Pobjikha Valley in Wangdue Phodrang and Bumdeling in Trasiyangtse.
